节奏非常沉缓凝滞，有些地方连演员的动作似乎都在刻意放慢。剧情上大体就是照着老版翻拍的，加长、放大了城市中闹瘟疫的部分，结尾做了一个较为颠覆性的改编，相当于把茂瑙版还算圆满的结局变成了一场徒劳无功的暗淡收场。哥特风格美术的呈现非常华丽又特别实际。很多景致都不像是因电影特意而成的搭景，古堡、乡村、小镇、河道、游船都如同在本土生长发展而来，带有一股自然感、历史感，上面累积的灰尘和蛛网也像是本就在那里一样。陌生的孩童在废旧古堡的陋巷里拉小提琴，和俯瞰全镇布满老鼠、棺材的几幕，透露出死亡气息中的美感。
