奥斯卡最佳动画片奖于2001年设立，并于第74届奥斯卡奖开始颁发，美国电影艺术与科学学院规定动画的长度必须超过70分钟才可以参加奥斯卡最佳动画长片的竞赛。2002年，奥斯卡最佳动画奖被细分为最佳动画长片奖和最佳动画短片奖两个奖项。
